IIEP-UNESCO Strategic Debate: When crisis meets crisis
Providing equal access to education for refugees is a challenge across all school levels, and especially in higher education where only 3% of refugees are enrolled. The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) has set an ambitious target to ensure that 15% of young refugee women and men are enrolled in higher education by 2030. This would have many benefits not only for refugees, but for host countries and their education systems.
What can host countries and their higher education institutions do to facilitate access for refugees? How can barriers such as language, credential recognition, and costs and financing be addressed? What new challenges has COVID-19 created for refugees?
Join the next Strategic Debate on 13 April 2021 from 10am-12pm UTC, with:
- Manal Stulgaitis, Education Officer, UNHCR
- Wondwosen Tamrat, Associate professor and President of St Mary’s University, Ethiopia
- Hana El Ghali, higher education policy expert
- Safia Ibrahimkhel, alumna and former refugee student, Pakistan
Michaela Martin, Research and Development team leader, IIEP-UNESCO, will moderate the debate.
