In a joint 2021 online post, the World Bank, UNESCO and UNICEF described “the global disruption to education caused by the COVID-19 pandemic [as] the worst education crisis on record.” Now, they are urging countries to address “learning recovery and acceleration” (2022).

Drawing on data from Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America for a recent Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) study, this seminar offers insights into the diverse realities of rural children’s schooling during the pandemic.

At the same time, it will raise questions about the possible impacts on rural children of planned global strategies to “Build Forward Better” by greater use of technology, catch-up classes and increased assessment.
