 brates the launch of a Special Issue of the Education and Conflict Review 
 (ECR) on ‘Rebuilding Syrian higher education for a stable future’ and 
 is jointly hosted by Cara (The Council for At Risk Academics) and the Cent
 re for Education and International Development\, UCL Institute of Educatio
 n\, London.\nECR focuses on debates about education\, conflict and interna
 tional development and provides a forum for knowledge exchange to build sy
 nergies between academics\, practitioners and graduate students who are re
 searching and working in these environments. The violent conflict in Syria
  since 2011 has become one of the most devastating humanitarian disasters 
 in human history\, forcing over 5.6 million Syrians into exile. The Syrian
  higher education sector has been decimated by the destruction of building
 s and campuses\, the loss of large numbers of academics and a lack of accr
 editation or support for those areas outside of the control of the ruling 
 party. For the North West of the country\, which remains outside the regim
 e control\, the impact has been particularly severe.\nThis special issue b
 rings together a series of articles\, many written or co-written by Syrian
  academics\, that evaluate the impact of the crisis on higher education\, 
 its current role in providing support during this crisis and its potential
  role in reconstruction. The launch event will be an opportunity to hear f
 rom some of these academics on findings from their research\, from Cara on
  the importance of supporting higher education and from ECR editors on the
  edition as a whole. Professor Tristan McCowan from UCL will provide a res
 ponse to the presentations and there will be opportunities for questions a
