SUMMARY:Quality assurance in doctoral programmes in Uganda: Fitness-for-pur
 pose versus excellence
DESCRIPTION:Tuesday 18 March\, 12:00-13:00 GMT. GS5 and online\n REGISTER
HERE\n Speaker: Dr Irene Etomaru\, Makerere University\, Uganda – Colle
ge of Education and External Studies\, East African School of Higher Educa
tion Studies and Development\, and Department of Higher Education Studies
and Development.\n Join us for a seminar jointly organised by the Researc
h for Equitable Access and Learning (REAL) Centre at the Faculty of Educat
ion\, and the British Association for International &amp\; Comparative Edu
cation (BAICE). This is an in-person event at the Faculty of Education\, C
ambridge\, with the option to join online.\nSummary\nThere is unprecedente
d expansion of doctoral education and training worldwide\, triggered by co
untries’ ambitions to establish themselves as knowledge societies throug
h research and innovations. Concerns about quality assurance in doctoral p
rogrammes have become eminent. This seminar discusses a paper examining me
chanisms for quality assurance of inputs\, processes and outputs in doctor
al programmes in Uganda. Using qualitative\, exploratory multiple case stu
dy research design\, data was collected through in-depth interviews\, focu
s group discussions and documents to review at systems and institutional l
evels. Thematic analysis of data reveals a fitness-for-purpose versus exce
llence conundrum demonstrated by the narrow focus of the quality assurance
mechanisms. The findings raise questions about the relevance and competit
iveness of the doctorates and their research outputs considering the imper
atives of the 21st century.\nThe seminar makes policy and practice recomme
ndations to enhance quality assurance in doctoral education in Uganda\, wh
ich can be of relevance to developing countries operating in similar conte
 xts.\n&nbsp\;\n
