SUMMARY:Local environment education practice within a context of policy dec
 entralisation: lessons from Nepal
DESCRIPTION:3 March\, 15:00-16:30 GMT\nREGISTER HERE TO JOIN IN PERSON OR O
NLINE\nWith Boris Kilgarriff and Guarav Thapa\nOrganised by the Centre for
  International Education\, University of Sussex.\nOver the past decade\, p
ublic awareness and political engagement with Nepal's climate vulnerabilit
y have risen in correlation with the increasing frequency and severity of
environmental disasters within Nepal. Despite growing recognition that a l
ong-term educational approach is required to prepare Nepal’s population
for an uncertain future\, in 2020\, the secondary-level school subject ‘
Health\, Population and Environment’ was removed from the compulsory cur
riculum and made an optional module available for Grades 9-12. This decisi
on can be understood as part of Nepal’s current national education strat
egy\, as outlined in the 2015 Constitution\, which emphasises decentralisa
tion of education policy. In theory\, this gives local schools and municip
al governments scope to develop their own curricula emphasising local envi
ronmental factors.\nThis presentation explores how decentralisation has le
d to the reproduction of inequalities within education provision\, particu
larly within the field of environment education\, and tentatively suggests
steps towards a more equitable approach. Itx explores possibilities for f
uture collaborations that might deepen democratic processes of local knowl
 edge conservation within schools.
