 in the 1980s\, sociocultural and practice-based approaches to literacy\, a
 lso known as New Literacy Studies (NLS)\, are an established research fiel
 d. And yet this impressive body of work has had little impact on policy. T
 his presentation explores possible reasons\, focusing on literacy in prima
 ry schools in England.\nUta Papen is Professor of Literacy Studies in the 
 Department of Linguistics and English language at Lancaster University. Sh
 e is co-director of the Lancaster Literacy Research Centre. Her research i
 nterests are: literacy studies\, literacy education for children\, adult l
 iteracy policy and practice\, linguistic landscape research\, ethnography 
 and action research.
