DESCRIPTION:Can education systems anticipate the challenges of artificial i
ntelligence?\n\n\n\nThere is increasing concern that artificial intelligen
ce could automate many jobs and displace scores of workers in the next dec
ade or two. The usual response to this possibility is to argue that automa
tion has never caused long-term unemployment in the past and that displace
d workers just need more education to move into higher-skill jobs. But is
this the right response and will it be enough?\n\nIn our upcoming Strateg

SUMMARY:2019 Global Education Monitoring Report - UK Launch\, 20 November
DESCRIPTION:Building bridges\, not walls: Key lessons from the 2019 Global
Education Monitoring Report on migration and displacement\n\nTuesday\, 20
 November 2018\n2:00 - 4:30 PM\nWellcome Collection\, 183 Euston Road\, Lon
 don\, NW1 2BE\, United Kingdom\n\nFree registration will be from 1:30pm wi
th refreshments\, starting promptly at 2:00pm\n\nREGISTER HERE\n\n\nThe th
ird report in the Global Education Monitoring (GEM) Report series will con
tinue its assessment of progress towards Sustainable Development Goal 4 (S
DG 4) on education and its ten targets\, as well as other related educatio
n targets in the SDG agenda.\n\nThe main focus of the 2019 GEM Report is m
igration and displacement. Over a year in the making\, the Report will pre
sent evidence on the implications of different types of migration and disp
lacement for education but also the impact that reforming curricula\, peda
gogy and teacher preparation can have on embracing diversity.\n\nThe 2019
GEM Report will make the case for investing in the education of children l
eft behind by migrant parents or following them as seasonal migrants\; in
countries with high rates of emigration and those seeing high rates of imm
igration\; in short-term refugee emergencies and in protracted crises\, an
alyzing challenges to effective humanitarian financing for education. It w
ill also examine the risks and opportunities of skilled migration. Its con
clusions and recommendations will advance the aims of SDG 4 and its call t
 o #LeaveNoOneBehind.\n\nUK Launch\n\nTwo migration and displacement issues
will be the focus of the event. First\, the Report estimates that in 2017
over 84 million people were displaced\, either due to conflict\, persecut
ion or natural disaster. Many of these are much younger than the correspon
ding population of migrants. Education can provide them with a protective
and stable environment\, building resilience for children whose lives have
descended into chaos. However\, education for the displaced requires long
-term planning and investment. While some countries have embraced this pri
nciple of refugee inclusion despite their limited resources\; others have
yet to do so\, partly because they need more support. Achieving this is a
shared responsibility.\n\nSecond\, migration and displacement can challeng
e policy makers to re-examine what and how education is being taught to bu
ild inclusive societies and help people live together\, not just be tolera
nt. Education that values diversity is important for all countries\, no ma
tter their migration history or present circumstances. Education’s role
and responsibility goes beyond building tolerant societies that passively
accept but do not necessarily embrace differences to building inclusive so
cieties that appreciate and respect differences and provide high-quality e
ducation for all.\n\nCo-hosted by the UK’s Education and Development For
um (UKFIET)\, BAICE and the GEM Report the event will convene speakers fro
m across UK Government\, the donor community\, education and humanitarian
 experts\, teachers\, students and parents.\n\nFollowing a presentation of
the key findings and recommendations from the 2019 GEM Report\, the first
of two panels will focus on the need for safe\, quality and inclusive educ
ation in displacement and draw attention to the role of the international
community in supporting countries in strengthening education policies and
planning to effectively respond to current and emerging humanitarian situa
tions. A second panel discussion will focus on strategies to foster an inc
lusive education system with a focus on diversity\, speakers will share ex
amples of current initiatives from across the UK to promote better interac
tion amongst families\, schools and local communities and support societie
s to become more culturally aware\, cohesive and tolerant.\n\nAlongside th
e event in London\, the Report will also be launched on the same day in Be
rlin\, Bangkok and Nairobi. Over the course of the following three months
it will be launched in a further 60 national events involving Ministers\,
 academics\, civil society\, and youth.\n\nProgramme\n\n\n\n13:45-14:00\nRe

SUMMARY:Innovation: then what?
DESCRIPTION:5 December\, 5.30pm\, London\nAn event hosted by Cambridge Educ
ation in partnership with the Open University\nComplex development challen
ges require innovative solutions. But innovation is only the first step. H
ow do you scale it\, sustain it\, and support its evolution?\nBangladesh
’s English in Action programme is widely recognised as one of the most s
uccessful teacher development programmes of its kind. It is probably best
known for its ground-breaking\, and much replicated\, use of mobile phones
to share audio and video materials.\nHowever\, this is just a small part
of the EIA story. Less well-known is the story of how it achieved and inst
itutionalised a change in learning culture. A journey which encountered ma
 ny challenges\, and at times\, failures\, along the way.\nA new book\, Sus
tainable English Language Teacher Development at Scale: Lessons from Bangl
adesh (Bloomsbury\, 2018)\, provides a detailed review of this award-winni
ng programme. Looking at what did and didn’t work\, and what was learned
along the way.\nFeaturing perspectives from the project team\, government
officials\, and Bangladeshi teachers\, this launch event provides an info
rmal opportunity to debate what comes after innovation – in particular\,
scale up and sustainability.\nJoin us in London on Wednesday 5 December f
rom 5.30pm for some mulled wine and mince pies.\nREGISTER HERE

SUMMARY:IIEP Strategic Debate: Learning at the bottom of the pyramid
DESCRIPTION:In low- and middle-income countries\, efforts to raise educatio

IIEP for an important conversation on how to shift the focus to include al

outcomes. Not only would this help to improve equity and inclusion in educ
ation – a core area of the fourth Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 4)
 – it would raise national levels of learning.\n\nDan Wagner\, UNESCO Cha

SUMMARY:#ALL4SOCIALCHANGE PhD Webinar on Bilingual Literacy for Life: an et
hnographic study of an indigenous language literacy programme in Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Free webinar on Thursday 29th August at 1pm\nRegister here.\n\n
This webinar will focus on Indigenous language literacy practices for adul
ts\, specifically analysing a government-led literacy programme in Mexico
called the Bilingual Literacy for Life Programme (BLLP). This research is
aligned with the current sustainable development agenda that outlines cert
ain transformative goals and targets regarding education\, including elimi
nating gender disparities and ensuring equitable access to quality educati
on\, particularly for Indigenous peoples and vulnerable populations.\n\nDr
awing from ethnographic techniques in literacy research\, three case studi
es were carried out in the Mexican states of Campeche\, Oaxaca and San Lui
s Potosi. The data that was collected consisted of study circle observatio
ns and semi-structured interviews with 25 participants and 9 facilitators
in order to determine the impact of this literacy programme and to explore
the different meanings\, values and uses of Indigenous language literacy
in the everyday lives of the participants. This study aims to bridge an ep
istemological gap between government-led literacy programmes and policies
and their respective local practices\, thereby informing and enhancing the
discourse and literature regarding literacy practices in the social and c
ultural contexts of Indigenous communities.\n\nAdditionally\, the findings
of this study will have implications for policymakers and practitioners i
n different country contexts and will aim to contribute to both the wider
landscape of international educational development studies in the global S
outh and to adult literacy studies more generally.\n\nRegister here.\n\nEn

SUMMARY:Pathways to inclusive and equitable quality education for people wi
th disabilities: Cross context conversations and mutual learning
DESCRIPTION:International symposium 12-13 February 2020\nWhile the promise
of education for all has been enshrined in international commitments\, wha
t remains unclear is how best this vision can be achieved in practice. Ack
nowledging the broader understanding of inclusive education for all\, in t
his symposium we choose to forefront children with disabilities\, a group
that continues to face various forms of exclusion within education.\n\nThi
s symposium aims to provide a space to forefront contextual complexities a
nd dilemmas\, but move the debates forward to critically examine where cur
rent hurdles exist\, and how to better address the significant inequalitie
s that exist in providing “inclusive and equitable quality education”
(Sustainable Development Goal 4) for children and young people with disabi
lities across the globe. This cross-national dialogue\, we hope\, will ena
ble sharing of practices and encourage learning from each other\, given th
at there exist unique strengths in different systems.\n\nThe invited speak
ers have been selected to provide access to critical debates\, discussion
and approaches to education of children with disabilities from a wide inte
rnational perspective. The event will have an interactive format with ampl
e opportunities for presentations\, dialogue\, knowledge sharing and refle
ctions.\n\nThe following themes will be covered:\n\n Pedagogies in practi
ce: teaching-learning processes and experiences in the classroom\n Learne
r experiences: experiences of children and young people with disabilities
in a range of educational settings\n Educational spaces: where learning h
appens and fluidity of boundaries between these spaces\n Disability inter
sectionality: how disability intersects with other important markers of ex
 clusion such as gender\, location\, ethnicity\, migration etc.\, and the v
arying impact on the educational pathways and experiences of these childre
n.\n\nThe first day will end with a social event at the Department of Educ
ation and Special Education\, including an opportunity for various partici

SUMMARY:Diaspora And Internationalisation In Higher Education: A BAICE Them
 atic Forum
DESCRIPTION:27 February 2020\n09.30 – 16.30\nSenate House\, University of
  London\, Malet Street\, London\, WC1E 7HU\n\n\n\nThe increased movement o
f people coupled with the rise of communications technology has made it po
ssible for ever larger groups of mobile people to maintain contact with th
eir homelands over vast distances. The term ‘diaspora’ is increasingly
employed to describe these relations and it is used widely by academics\,
policy-makers\, and national and supra-national institutions. The prolife
ration of diasporas linked with increasing academic and student mobility/m
igration has contributed to shaping the contemporary diasporic conditions
in many (internationalising) national higher education systems. Yet despit
e this growing phenomenon\, and increasing national policy initiatives to
engage with diasporas\, there has been rather less research on the complex
relationship between diaspora and higher education\, and particularly sch
olarship around internationalisation. Through contributions from scholars
from around the world\, we aim to critically examine diverse theoretical p
erspectives and empirical cases of diaspora and how they connect with and
inform the theme of internationalisation in higher education.\n\n\n\n\n R

DESCRIPTION:The Early Career Professionals Network\, sponsored by UKFIET\,
is hosting an event on 19 June 2019\, 5-7pm at the Cambridge Education off
ices\, London. In alignment with the biennial September UKFIET conference\
, which this year focuses on Inclusive Education Systems\, this ‘next ge

on with research\, implementation and putting policy into practice.\n\nAs
part of the event\, there will be a panel discussion featuring Early Caree
r Professionals from Plan UK\, Cambridge Education and others to be confir
med\, who will discuss their own work and experience of working for inclus
ion in international education. Some of the questions and themes will focu
s on:\n\n How can inclusive learning environments be best provided for ch
ildren with disabilities\, given the financial constraints of both schools
and ministries of education?\n How can teachers be supported to identify
and meet the needs for the variety of different learning and physical dis
abilities that they may encounter?\n What does inclusive teaching practic
e look like\, particularly for children with disabilities? Given teachers
’ large classes and lack of training\, how can teachers be supported to
demonstrate this type of practice?\n What are the best ways to assess chi
ldren with disabilities who do not meet the minimum competencies for their
grade level? How can these be incorporated into a national assessment sys
tem?\n\nWe are inviting participants who are Early Career Professionals fr
om a range of backgrounds. We hope to provide an engaging Q&amp\;A session
after the panel discussion. To conclude the event\, there will also be an

SUMMARY:RISE Online Presentation Series
DESCRIPTION:In the absence of the RISE Annual Conference\, this summer’s
Online Presentation Series continues the RISE tradition of gathering emerg
ing scholarship that considers the learning crisis from an education syste
ms perspective. And since we cannot gather in person\, we thought this was
an opportune time to experiment with the event format. As such\, each aut
hor will present their paper in a pre-recorded video that will be availabl
e via the RISE YouTube channel (and via the links below) prior to the "liv
e" panel discussion taking place on Zoom. The panel discussion will focus
on discussing each of the papers and Q&amp\;A from event participants\, th
erefore we encourage everyone to watch the videos prior to the "live" even
t.\n\nThe first panel focuses on how to tackle inequality in learning outc
omes. The second explores how to align curriculum goals and assessment to
deliver learning. And the final two consider the role of teachers: how tea
cher preparation and coaching can improve learning outcomes when they are
coherent with other elements of the education system\, and finally how the
design of career and compensation structures bear on teacher motivation a
nd classroom outcomes.\n\nIndividual session registration links are listed
here\; pre-registration is required to join the event. Questions can be s
ubmitted during the event by those registered and logged in. All sessions
will be live-streamed via the RISE YouTube channel and this event page.\n\

reventing a second Great Depression through his stewardship of the 2009 Lo

to initiate calls for global financial action\, while introducing a range
of rescue measures in the UK. In April 2009\, he hosted the G20 Summit in
London where world leaders committed to make an additional $1.1 trillion a

journey from Syria to Germany in a steel wheelchair. Nujeen was born with
cerebral palsy and spent the majority of her life confined to her apartmen
t in Aleppo\, Syria\, where she taught herself English watching shows on T

parents stayed in Turkey while she set out with her sister across the Med

of her challenges have propelled this young refugee from Syria into the s
potlight as the human face of an increasingly dehumanised crisis. Since mo

SUMMARY:COVID-19 and its impact on Adult Learning and Education
DESCRIPTION:\nREGISTER HERE\nCurrent debates and policy initiatives dominan
tly look at mitigating COVID-19 impacts on formal schooling\, such as the
effects of the shift to online learning. Against this backdrop\, less atte
ntion is given to adult learning despite being widely recognised as having
a vital role to play in the post-COVID-19 community strengthening. This w
ebinar will explore the (potential) effects of the pandemic to adult learn
ing and education programmes in contrasting contexts of Afghanistan\, the
Philippines\, Uganda\, and the UK. Drawing from these reflections\, we hop
e that a better understanding of how COVID-19 affects ALE programmes will
open up discussions on how academia\, governments\, and civil society acto
rs could better engage with opportunities and challenges in the sector pos
t-pandemic and beyond.\n\n***\n\nThe British Association for Literacy in D

arning for Social Transformation at the University of East Anglia to deliv
er another virtual Informal Literacy Discussion (ILD)! ILDs have been runn
ing since 2011 and are led by literacy practitioners and academics on a ra
nge of current ‘hot topics’ in literacy.\n\n***\n\nBALID is a non-gove

how adult learning – particularly for women and young adults - can help
address inequalities in the poorest communities of the world. Through inve

, in conjunction with UKFIET and the Centre for International Education (C

xploring the theme of ‘the Political Economy of Education in Times of Co
nflict\, Crises and Pandemics’.\n\nThis series will be led and hosted by
the Centre for International Education (CIE) University of Sussex between
October and December 2020 and will be openly accessible\, free and online
and aimed at scholars and students of international development and educa
tion\, and all those who seek to better understand the complex situations
facing education systems around the world in a period of increasing instab
ility\, where education systems are challenged by war\, environmental cris
is\, financial austerity and pandemics that threaten the futures of a gene
ration of young people. The lecture series will be recorded and uploaded o
nto a designated webpage and contribute to an open source bank of material
s and resources on the Political Economy of Education that will be produce
d by the PEER Network team during the lifespan of the project.\n\nThe Poli
tical Economy of Education in Times of Conflict\, Crises and Pandemics\n\n
Whilst the current COVID19 pandemic has brought home to many citizens in t
he Global North the fragility of their existence\, their education systems
lack of resilience\, and exacerbated and revealed widespread learning ine
qualities\; in the Global South this is but one more crisis in a long list
that have punctuated daily lives and educational journeys. This lecture s
eries seeks to challenge its speakers and participants to go beyond narrow
understandings of education and its relationship to economy and society a
nd to critically explore the complex ways that education systems are linke
 d to war\, peace\, ecological crises\, financial crises and pandemics –
not merely as victims but also as drivers and catalysts. In doing so we se
ek to highlight that education systems and actors have agency\, capable of
producing conflict ridden and crises prone systems as well as succumbing
to these factors\, and that policy and practice matters in the pursuit of
more socially just and equitable educational systems that can contribute t
o a fairer and better world. We also seek to highlight how education syste
ms are affected by particular crises and what policy options they might ha
ve to redress this.\n\nIn that sense the series also seeks to recognise th
at education policy and practice is about power and its projection into th
e education system by competing social forces. For that reason we seek to
draw upon a wide range of contexts and examples to highlight these contest
ations and their effects on issues of education and social justice/injusti
ce in times of conflict and crises.\n\nCalendar of Events\n\n Thursday 8t

for International Education (CIE) University of Sussex are organising a gl

ries will be led and hosted by the Centre for International Education (CIE
) University of Sussex between October and December 2020 and will be openl

national development and education\, and all those who seek to better unde

threaten the futures of a generation of young people. The lecture series w
ill be recorded and uploaded onto a designated webpage and contribute to a
n open source bank of materials and resources on the Political Economy of
Education that will be produced by the PEER Network team during the lifesp

ict\, Crises and Pandemics\n\nWhilst the current COVID19 pandemic has brou
ght home to many citizens in the Global North the fragility of their exist
ence\, their education systems lack of resilience\, and exacerbated and re
vealed widespread learning inequalities\; in the Global South this is but
one more crisis in a long list that have punctuated daily lives and educat
ional journeys. This lecture series seeks to challenge its speakers and pa
rticipants to go beyond narrow understandings of education and its relatio
nship to economy and society and to critically explore the complex ways th
at education systems are linked to war\, peace\, ecological crises\, finan
cial crises and pandemics – not merely as victims but also as drivers an
d catalysts. In doing so we seek to highlight that education systems and a
ctors have agency\, capable of producing conflict ridden and crises prone
systems as well as succumbing to these factors\, and that policy and pract
ice matters in the pursuit of more socially just and equitable educational
systems that can contribute to a fairer and better world. We also seek to
highlight how education systems are affected by particular crises and wha
t policy options they might have to redress this.\n\nIn that sense the ser
ies also seeks to recognise that education policy and practice is about po
wer and its projection into the education system by competing social force
 s. For that reason we seek to draw upon a wide range of contexts and examp
les to highlight these contestations and their effects on issues of educat

DESCRIPTION:Webinar: Monday 19th October 2020\, 12-1pm (UK time)\n\nRegiste
r: www.bit.ly/FamilyLiteracyEduDev\nFamily literacy programmes in the Glob

eracy. This webinar will present preliminary findings from the UKRI-funded
research 'Family Literacy\, Indigenous Learning and Sustainable Developme
nt Project' which set out to develop an alternative model of family lite
racy that could build on indigenous knowledge and everyday learning. Team
members will share their ethnographic research on indigenous approaches t
o intergenerational learning and knowledge in Nepal\, Ethiopia\, the Phili
ppines and Malawi\, exploring literacy practices in relation to diverse li
velihoods\, religion\, health\, forestry and agriculture. The research aim
s to bring policymakers' and educators' attention to the disjunction betwe

the ways in which adults and children learn in everyday life in order to e

SUMMARY:Zooming ahead creatively: enhancing literacy practice and research
DESCRIPTION:\n\n\n\nVitual platforms pose creative new opportunities! Join
us to explore using virtual platforms to enhance literacy research and pra
ctice.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn the current climate of COVID-19\, interacti
ons with groups\, communities and individuals are increasingly taking plac
e virtually\, through the wealth of available remote platforms. These new
technologies bring challenges to literacy researchers and practitioners bo
th in learning to use the technology and also in selecting effective techn
iques.\n\nOne option is to use asynchronous communication by email or post
\; perhaps setting activities or questionnaires to be completed and return
ed. These have their place\, and also their limitations\, especially when
engaging in literacy and wanting to promote dialogue and interaction.\n\nS
ome researchers and practitioners are grasping the opportunity to use new
technologies creatively with sometimes surprising outcomes.\n\nThis online
\, real-time Zoom event will explore how technological solutions can open
up creative spaces for real-time interaction and dialogue. There will be o
pportunities to engage in small group discussions\, experience open-source
technologies and resources as well as to hear directly from creative lite
racy practitioners and researchers sharing their experiences.\n\n\n\n\nWe
would like to know more about those who will be participating in this even
t to help in our planning.\n\nPlease click here to answer 3 questions fo
 r us.\n\nWe look forward to hearing from you.\n\nThank you\n\n&nbsp\;\n\n\
n\nInvitation to contribute\nWe are expecting that there will be participa
nts with valuable experience to share.......\n\nIf you have been implement
ing creative virtual approaches to research\, literacy and education initi

evelopment and education\, and all those who seek to better understand the
complex situations facing education systems around the world in a period
of increasing instability\, where education systems are challenged by war\
, environmental crisis\, financial austerity and pandemics that threaten t
he futures of a generation of young people. The lecture series will be rec
orded and uploaded onto a designated webpage and contribute to an open sou
rce bank of materials and resources on the Political Economy of Education
that will be produced by the PEER Network team during the lifespan of the
project.\n\nThe Political Economy of Education in Times of Conflict\, Cris
es and Pandemics\n\nWhilst the current COVID19 pandemic has brought home t
o many citizens in the Global North the fragility of their existence\, the
ir education systems lack of resilience\, and exacerbated and revealed wid
espread learning inequalities\; in the Global South this is but one more c
risis in a long list that have punctuated daily lives and educational jour
neys. This lecture series seeks to challenge its speakers and participants
to go beyond narrow understandings of education and its relationship to e
conomy and society and to critically explore the complex ways that educati
on systems are linked to war\, peace\, ecological crises\, financial crise
s and pandemics – not merely as victims but also as drivers and catalyst
 s. In doing so we seek to highlight that education systems and actors have
agency\, capable of producing conflict ridden and crises prone systems as
well as succumbing to these factors\, and that policy and practice matter
s in the pursuit of more socially just and equitable educational systems t
hat can contribute to a fairer and better world. We also seek to highlight
how education systems are affected by particular crises and what policy o
ptions they might have to redress this.\n\nIn that sense the series also s
eeks to recognise that education policy and practice is about power and it
s projection into the education system by competing social forces. For tha
t reason we seek to draw upon a wide range of contexts and examples to hig
hlight these contestations and their effects on issues of education and so
cial justice/injustice in times of conflict and crises.\n\nCalendar of Eve

SUMMARY:COVID-19 and the Global Education Emergency: Planning Systems for R
 ecovery and Resilience
DESCRIPTION:2020 T20 Saudi Arabia Summit Side Event \nCOVID-19 and the Glo
bal Education Emergency: Planning Systems for Recovery and Resilience \nW
 hen: Thursday\, 5 November 2020  \nTime: 9 – 10:30 am EST\; 11 am – 1
 2:30 pm Argentina\; 3-4:30 pm CET\; 5 – 6:30 pm Riyadh \nLanguages: Eng
 lish and Spanish \nJoin English: https://youtube.com/WesternUniversity \
 nJoin Spanish: https://youtube.com/cippec \nContact: infoeducacion@cippec
.org  \nBackground \nThe pandemic necessitates immediate policy action t
o address the grave global health and socio-economic effects of COVID-19 t
o unprecedented scale. Special Task Force 11\, (COVID-19) Multidisciplinar
y Approaches to Complex Problems\, was created within the structure of Thi
nk 20 (T20) Saudi Arabia to consolidate recommendations to provide policy
direction\, with a focus on the vulnerable\, to meet the wide-reaching imm
ediate consequences of the pandemic and a view towards recovery and recons
truction.   \nIn education\, the pandemic has resulted in the largest di
sruption in history. It has exacerbated existing inequities and created ne
w severe gaps that threaten progress all countries have made. Schooling di
sruption and continuing education systems issues have serious long-term so
cial consequences and to national economies. \nThe pandemic exposed the s
cale to which education systems were unprepared for crises. G20 countries
face dual challenges. All must respond domestically to their unique circum
 stances\, and\, some\, as OECD DAC donors. Given their influence\, their p
olicy responses will have domestic\, regional\, and global implications.
\nSide Event Aims \nThis side event aims to mobilize and extend knowled
ge from the T20 Task Force 11 policy brief\, COVID-19 and the Global Educa
tion Emergency: Planning systems for recovery and resilience\, within and
 beyond T20 networks\, as the 2020 T20/G20 Saudi Arabia Summits come to a c
lose and in view of the transition to 2021 T20/G20 Italy.  \nThe T20 Secr
etariat presented education policy recommendations for the 2nd Ministries
of Education official meeting organised by the G20 Education Working Group
. A number of recommendations from the brief were incorporated in the T20
Saudi Arabia high-level Calls for Commitment to Education.  \nThis side e
vent comes at a crucial time as most countries continue to experience disr
uptions to regular and continuous education provision\, and many have ente
red a second academic year affected by the pandemic. The event will presen
t the brief’s recommendations. It will engage in a frank interactive dis
cussion with co-authors on building resilient systems for recovery and con
nect with their individual and organisational fields of expertise. This wi
ll be extended by summative commentary from T20 Task Force 6 and 11 Co-Cha
irs and Executive Director\, ASviS Italy. \nThe side event seeks to addre
ss the following questions: \n\n	What are the key recommendations for bui
lding more resilient systems in view of the pandemic? \n	What key interve
ntions seem potentially critical in addressing some of the challenges? \n
How can countries respond to the education crisis with regards to systems
planning and delivery? \n\nThe brief was led by Prof. Prachi Srivastava
 (lead author\, Western University)\, co-led and co-authored by Alejandra C
ardini (T20 Task Force 6 Co-chair and Education Director\, CIPPEC Argentin
a)\, and co-authored by Iván Matovich (CIPPEC Argentina)\; Hugues Moussy
and Amélie A. Gagnon (UNESCO–IIEP)\; Robert Jenkins and Nicholas Reuge
(UNICEF)\; and Kate Moriarty and Sonja Anderson (Inter-agency Network for
 Education in Emergencies [INEE]).  \n

SUMMARY:Bristol Conversations in Education - Re-imagining UK education rese

DESCRIPTION:This is an online event - please register here to receive furth
er details.\n\nThis event is part of the School of Education's Bristol Con
versations in Education research seminar series. These seminars are free a
nd open to the public.\n\nSpeakers: Dr Rafael Mitchell (School of Educatio
n\, University of Bristol)\, Dr Tigist Grieve (School of Education\, Unive
rsity of Bristol)\, Dr Kelsey Shanks (GCRF Challenge Leader for Education
Research\, Ulster University)\; Dr Maria Teresa Pinto Ocampo (National Uni
versity of Colombia)\, Professor Isabella Aboderin (Perivoli Africa Resear
ch Centre\, University of Bristol) and Dr Ashley Jay Brockwell (London Int
erdisciplinary School)\n\nCo-hosted by the Centre for Comparative and Inte
rnational Research in Education (CIRE)\, TESF and the International Develo
pment Research Group \n\nThis webinar is an opportunity for sharing evide
nce\, experiences\, strategies and plans for the purpose of collectively r
e-imagining the relationships and responsibilities of UK-based researchers
engaged in education partnerships in the former colonised countries of th
e South. This conversation takes place in the GCRF era\, a UK Government i
ntervention intended to stimulate and fund research that addresses complex
and interconnected social and environmental global challenges through int
ernational\, interdisciplinary and multi-stakeholder partnerships. GCRF ca
lls for “meaningful and equitable research relationships between UK rese
arch institutions and developing country partners” as a basis for the co
-production of knowledge and mutual capacity development.\n\nEfforts to es
tablish such relationships occur within a wider global context shaped by t
he ongoing legacies of the UK’s colonial history. These include unequall
y resourced national and institutional research environments\, established
theory that is largely framed by the perspectives and concerns of Western
researchers\, and political agendas that seek to maximise the UK’s glob
al influence and access to international markets (rather than\, say\, the
desire for reparative justice).\n\nEvidence from UK-funded education resea
rch partnerships indicates persistent inequalities at the levels of access
  to research partnerships (e.g. by geographical location\, institution\, g
ender) and participation within these partnerships\, in terms of the inequ
itable division of intellectual labour and rewards. This event proceeds fr
om the recognition that these are UK problems\, reflecting how research is
  conceived\, conducted\, funded\, managed\, incentivised and evaluated in
our own context.\n\nIn bringing together representatives from universities
\, research centres and associations working in the education space\, the
webinar seeks to promote dialogue and understanding around the questions:
What\, if anything\, can be done to redress inequities within UK-funded in
ternational education research partnerships? And\, what in particular are
the responsibilities of UK-based researchers? \n\nThe event is divided int
o three sections:\n\n Evidence and experiences of challenges and inequiti
es\n Strategies and plans (including launch of the TESF Background Paper
Mobilising capacities for Transforming Education for Sustainable Futures:
Opening spaces for collaborative action and learning)\n Roundtable discus
sion of issues and next steps\n\nREGISTER FOR THIS EVENT\n\n
