While strengthening learning outcomes has been a priority in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), it is even more critical now given the learning losses experienced by students due to the COVID-19 pandemic-related school closures.

The Learning at Scale Study has been designed to investigate factors contributing to successful improvements in foundational learning outcomes in eight of the most effective large-scale early grade education programs in LMICs.

The study explores three overarching research questions, focused on understanding the components of instructional practices, instructional supports, and system supports that lead to effective instruction and improved learning outcomes. Each of these components is summarized in a series of short user-friendly briefs.

This event will explore the findings from the first brief which addresses the research question:

What classroom ingredients lead to learning in programs that are effective at scale?

During the event, you will hear from the authors of the study, as well as from practitioners from three of the eight featured programs that are successfully improving reading outcomes at scale. Featured programs will include the Scaling-up Early Reading Intervention (SERI) program in India, the EQUIP-T: Education Quality Improvement Program in Tanzania, and the USAID Tusome Early Grade Reading Activity in Kenya.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Asyia Kazmi, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
  • Jonathan Stern, RTI International
  • Margaret (Peggy) Dubeck, RTI International
  • Vincent Katabalo, EQUIP-T
  • Saktibrata Sen, SERI
  • Sarah Koko, Brenda Anjuri, Jessica Mejía, Tusome
