SUMMARY:Exploring perspectives on out-of-school children’s receptiveness
to ACE Radio School\, an alternative form of education\, in Northern Niger
 ia
DESCRIPTION:4 March\, 1-2pm GMT\nREGISTER HERE\nJoin this REAL Centre semin
ar in person at the Faculty of Education\, University of Cambridge\, or on
line\, to hear from invited speakers:\nKiki James\, CEO and Founder\, ACE
Charity and Margaret Ebubedike\, Research Fellow\, Open University\nDuring
the COVID-19 pandemic\, schools were forced to close\, forcing educationa
l institutions to embrace innovative means of delivering lessons to studen
ts. However\, many schools\, especially government-owned schools in Nigeri
a\, could not swiftly adapt to the internet-dependent mode of teaching stu
dents. ACE Radio School\, an alternative form of education\, was initiated
to provide learning to school children without access to remote learning.
The programme provided alternative education to out-of-school children in
Northern Nigeria\, a region with significantly higher numbers of out-of-s
chool children in the country. ACE Radio School was delivered through two
media: radio broadcasts and listening centres where children gathered to l
isten to the episodes through a speaker. The project recorded high success
and acceptability in a region reported to being averse to formal educatio
n.\nThis seminar explores the research conducted around understanding the
factors responsible for the receptiveness of ACE Radio School in Northern
Nigeria. The speakers will discuss what factors should be considered for s
uccessful design and implementation of educational interventions in the re
gion. Additionally\, the speakers will highlight how alternative education
can be effective and viable solution to solving the out-of-school crises
 in Nigeria.
