SUMMARY:Exploring ethics in the field: the importance of context and cultur
 e
DESCRIPTION:27 July 1-2pm BST\nJoin the Centre for the Study of Global Deve
lopment at the Open University for an online event to explore some of the
practical realities of undertaking research in the field.\nREGISTER HERE\n
In this discursive session\, Tom Power and Professor Jacqueline Stevenson
will explore some of the practical realities of undertaking research in th
e field\, highlighting the tensions between ‘procedural ethics’ (Guill
emin and Gillam\, 2004) and practical ethics. In doing so\, they will draw
on our research in Bangladesh exploring educational outcomes in rural and
remote communities\, their previous research with forced migrants\, inclu
ding asylum seekers and refugees\, and our research in prisons exploring i
n particular issues around informed consent. They will highlight some of t
he decisions we have had to make when seeking to be culturally responsive
and adaptive to context but which runs the risk of contravening the ethics
approval we have been given at an institutional level.
