SUMMARY:Examining the multilayered\, interconnected barriers to education i
 n South Sudan
DESCRIPTION:18 March\, 12:00-13:00 GMT\nREGISTER HERE\nOrganised by Educati
on Research in Conflict and Protracted Crisis (ERICC) Consortium\, Univers
ity College London (UCL)\nINEE\, IOE - UCL’s Institute of Education\, an
d the Education Research in Conflict and Protracted Crisis (ERICC) consort
ium invite you to a virtual Seminar as part of a Seminar series which aims
to promote dialogue and synergy between emerging findings from ERICC’s
programme and the work of scholars and practitioners in the field. The Sem
inar series will feature methodologies and emerging knowledge and offer sp
ace for inclusive cross-dialogue between academics\, students\, researcher
s and other experts in the field of education in conflict and protracted c
 rises. \nIn South Sudan\, decades of conflict\, political instability\, e
conomic fragility\, and climate shocks have placed the education system un
der severe strain\, resulting in persistent inequalities in access\, quali
ty\, and continuity of learning. Within this context\, education stakehold
ers at different levels experience and interpret barriers to education in
distinct yet interconnected ways.\nThis seminar brings together two studie
s which explore the multilayered barriers to education in South Sudan thro
ugh qualitative research with actors across national\, subnational\, and c
ommunity levels. Adopting a political economy of education perspective\, t
he studies examine how structural constraints\, policy challenges\, socioc
ultural norms\, and aid dynamics interact to sustain persistent barriers t
o learning.\nThe discussion will critically examine how these intersecting
factors shape education delivery and equity. It will also explore how div
erse stakeholder perspectives can inform the design of more coherent\, con
textually grounded\, and sustainable support to education systems in setti
ngs affected by protracted and overlapping crises.\nThe discussion will in
vite Seminar participants to share reflections on the following guiding qu
estions: \n\n	What do the barriers to education in South Sudan reveal abo
ut the broader political\, social\, and economic structures that sustain i
nequality\, and what are the implications for addressing them?\n	Whose per
spectives and priorities shape how barriers are understood and acted upon\
, and what does this mean for equity\, local ownership\, and decision-maki
ng in education policy and practice?\n	How can education systems in South
Sudan move towards sustainable solutions to address the root causes of exc
lusion\, and what are the implications for peacebuilding and long-term soc
ial transformation?\n\nCHAIR\nProfessor Tejendra Pherali\, University Coll
