SUMMARY:Education as a Tool for Existence: The Pedagogy of Hope in Palestin
 e
DESCRIPTION:3 February\, 15:00-16:30 GMT\nREGISTER HERE TO JOIN IN PERSON O
 R ONLINE\nWith Professor Saida Affouneh\, Dean\, Birzeit University\nOrgan
ised by the Centre for International Education and the Middle East and Nor
th Africa Centre\, University of Sussex.\nIn times of crisis\, education i
s often not considered a priority. This talk reframes education in Palesti
ne as something more fundamental: a tool for existence. Drawing on the con
cept of the pedagogy of hope\, the presentation explores how teaching and
learning function not only as mechanisms of knowledge transmission and tra
nsformation\, but also as practices through which individuals and communit
ies assert dignity\, justice\, rights and continuity under conditions of e
xistential threat. \nGrounded in lived educational experiences from Pales
tine\, the talk examines how hope is enacted pedagogically through everyda
y practices and through learners’ and teachers’ narratives\, rather th
an being treated as an abstract or aspirational ideal. It argues that in c
ontexts of occupation\, displacement and educide\, pedagogy becomes a site
of resistance and survival\, where learning sustains social memory\, iden
tity and collective action. A new theory of hope will be argued in this pr
esentation.  \nThe talk also presents a proposed model for education in c
risis contexts that integrates online and offline modalities with trauma-i
nformed pedagogy. Informed by the principles of hope and sumud (steadfastn
ess)\, this model seeks to sustain the right to education while responding
to the lived realities of learners and educators under an ongoing crisis.
