SUMMARY:Bureaucratic literacies\, community volunteering and social change
 in the Philippines
DESCRIPTION:Thursday 20 November\, 12:30-14:00 GMT\nFulton 212\, University
of Sussex or Zoom Webinar\nRegister here\nPart of the series: CIE Researc
 h Cafés\nSpeaker: Dr Chris Millora\, Goldsmiths\n"In the Philippines\, l
ocal volunteer action inspired by communal\, person-to-person solidarity c
oexists with forms shaped by the formalised mechanisms of NGOs\, funders a
nd government programmes. Drawing on my recent book Local Volunteering\, A
dult Learning and Social Change in the Philippines (Bloomsbury Academic 20
25)\, I explore how literacy and learning shape the ways bureaucratic forc
es from state and non-state development actors influence the activities\,
relationships\, and identities of local volunteers. I will take a closer l
ook into volunteers’ and other actors’ interactions with written texts
such as the manuals they read\, certificates they received and documents
they were expected to produce. In doing so\, I demonstrate how literacy an
d volunteering can\, counterintuitively\, reproduce and even intensify ine
qualities within already unequal communities. This ‘critical’ view of
volunteering is important especially as the United Nations declares 2026 a
s the International Year of Volunteering."\nTake a look at CIE's full even
