SUMMARY:Beyond deficit narratives: Reconceptualising the Learning Crisis in
  Africa
DESCRIPTION:5 February\, 16:00-18:00\nREGISTER TO JOIN AT UNIVERSITY COLLEG
E LONDON OR ONLINE\nJoin this event to hear discussions around the recentl
y published book\, Reconceptualising the Learning Crisis in Africa.\nSean
Higgins and Kwame Akyeampong will introduce and reflect on their recently
published book\, Reconceptualising the Learning Crisis in Africa. \nIt in
terrogates the notion of the “learning crisis” in Africa that currentl
y dominates the global education policy agenda. Challenging deficit narrat
ives of children\, communities and their teachers\, it re-envisions soluti
ons to educational marginalisation in Africa through case studies of accel
erated learning programmes in Ghana\, Liberia and Ethiopia.\nIn contrast\,
these innovative and transformative modalities of educational provision:\
 n\n	value children’s knowledges\, languages and cultural identity\n	ensu
re sustained and meaningful community engagement with communities experien
cing precarity\, and above all\n	embed holistic Afro-centric pedagogical p
ractices grounded in the relational ethic of Ubuntu.\n\nFirst\, there will
be a short presentation of the book’s key themes by Sean and Kwame. The
se will then be explored further by six discussants: \n\n	Michelle Schwei
sfurth (University of Glasgow)\n	Leon Tikly (University of Bristol)\n	Mose
 s Oketch (UCL)\n	Elaine Unterhalter (UCL)\n	Eliza Ngutuku (UCL)\, and\n	La
ila Kadiwal (UCL). \n\nThe discussion will then be opened to questions.\n
This event will be of interest to researchers and scholars of global educa
tional policy\, especially around ‘Education for All’\, post and decol
onial studies\, curriculum and pedagogical practices in Africa as well as
 NGOs and international aid and development agencies.\n&nbsp\;
