SUMMARY:Apartheid and education in South Africa and its global forms
DESCRIPTION:25 January 2024\, 13:00-14:00 GMT\nSpeakers: Professor Azeem Ba
droodien\, University of Cape Town and Dr Ayesha Omar\, SOAS\nAbout the se
minar:\nSouth Africa secured democracy in 1994\, one of the last few count
ries in Africa being liberated form settler colonial and apartheid rule. T
his seminar explores the ways in which the system of Apartheid perpetuated
racial minority privilege in all spheres\, denying the majority of basic
human rights. We will pay particular attention to how Apartheid (re)produc
ed systems of racism\, discrimination and colonisation for the benefit of
a few\, particularly in education. The seminar concludes by considering ho
w the forms of discrimination and racial privilege during Apartheid contin
ue nationally\, regionally and globally\, albeit in diverse forms and cont
exts.\nRegister to join this seminar in person or online here.\nAbout the
seminar series:\nThis joint REAL Centre/Centre for Lebanese Studies semina
r series aims to tackle multiple and interrelated injustices in the Global
South\, which manifest in war and genocide\, and their interconnection wi
th environmental degradation and resource conflict. Education is a critica
l site for scrutinising and deconstructing systemic injustice. This semina
r series pays particular attention to the way in which education is affect
ed\, both as potential cause\, consequence and maintainer of injustices\,
as well as opportunities education offers for eradicating inequities.\nThe
series examines the underlying historical and political processes that dr
ive and perpetuate these injustices. Particular attention is paid to the w
ays in which states in the Global North cause\, and exacerbate\, such inju
stices\, perpetuating the colonial legacy in diverse contexts of the Globa
l South. This series explores how the unfolding genocide and long-term occ
upation of Palestine highlight the inadequacy of the global system in addr
essing these atrocities. It explores how the global system propped up the
system of Apartheid in South Africa and how global support for human right
s was key to bringing out an end to the system in 1994. Likewise\, the int
ensifying turmoil in Sudan serves as a poignant illustration of the injust
ices perpetuated within an inequitable global system. Deploying an interse
ctional lens across diverse contexts\, this seminar series animates discus
sion about key education challenges\, including violence against girls and
  women\, racism\, colonialism\, displacement\, and advocates for ethical a
nd committed scholarship.\n&nbsp\;\nMore about the series and how to regis
 ter for all of the seminars.\n&nbsp\;
