 rnational Education Day 2024 delivered by Alicia Herbert OBE. At the House
 s of Parliament\, CPA Room London SW1A 0AA.\nThe Council for Education in 
 the Commonwealth are delighted that Alicia Herbert OBE will deliver its An
 nual Gladwyn Lecture 2024.\nAs FCDO’s Director of Education\, Gender and
  Equality Alicia leads on the UK’s international education strategy. Thi
 s includes an ambitious agenda to get children and young people learning\,
  especially girls. Alongside this role\, Alicia is also the UK’s Special
  Envoy for Gender Equality.\nOver the past 25 years\, she has played a lea
 ding role in shaping international development policy and driving programm
 e delivery and policy reform in countries across Sub-Saharan Africa and So
 uth Asia.\nIn the Annual Gladwyn Lecture 2024\, chaired by Stephen Twigg\,
  Alicia Herbert OBE will share her reflections on how the United Kingdom a
 nd the Commonwealth can respond to the global education crisis.\nThe sixth
  International Day of Education will be celebrated on 24 January 2024 unde
 r the theme “learning for lasting peace”.\nAfter decades of progress\,
  the number of out-of-school children around the world has risen. Today\, 
 250 million children and youth are out of school.\nAcross the Commonwealth
  and around the world\, conflict\, climate change\, food crises\, forced d
 isplacement and the aftermath of COVID-19 continue to strain education sys
 tems and deny millions of children the opportunity to learn and thrive.\nI
 t isn’t just a problem of access to education\, it’s a problem of qual
 ity too. Many children are not achieving minimum proficiency in reading or
  mathematics\, despite attending schools.\nThe Annual Gladwyn Lecture is o
 rganised by the Council for Education in the Commonwealth in honour of its
  former Patron\, Lord Gladwyn\, a distinguished diplomat and parliamentari
 an.\nThe Lecture focuses on an educational topic of relevance to the Commo
 nwealth and is delivered by an eminent expert.\nEarly booking is essential
